Singing in Solidarity with the Poor and Service Recognition for Pastoral Musicians

5:00 p.m.

In unity with our Holy Father, Pope Francis, on the second World Day of the Poor, all are invited to attend Singing in Solidarity with the Poor and Service Recognition for Pastoral Musicians on Sunday, November 18 at 5 p.m. at the Cathedral of Saint Francis of Assisi, Metuchen.  

After sung prayer, pastoral musicians celebrating significant anniversaries of music ministry will be recognized for their service. A monetary offering will be accepted to assist with the personal needs of the poor, as administered by the St. Francis Cathedral Social Concerns.

This event will be hosted by the Diocese of Metuchen's Office of Worship and the Metuchen Chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians.

Evening Prayer to launch Diocesan year of awakening

7:30 p.m.

Bishop Checchio has announced his plan to consecrate the Diocese of Metuchen to Our Lady of Guadalupe in 2019. There will be a year-long preparation process launching December 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, with Evening Prayer at the Cathedral of St. Francis in Metuchen at 7:30pm. All of the faithful are invited to attend. 

Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas and was also given the title, The Star of the New Evangelization, by St. John Paul II. The purpose of this consecration is to invoke her aid for our diocese so that we can be spiritually renewed and equipped to live out our call to evangelize more faithfully. Connect: A Eucharistic Holy Hour for Young Adults

7 p.m. – 8 p.m.

The Diocese of Metuchen's Office of Young Adult Ministry would love to get you connected! We will be hosting Adoration, Confession, and Praise and Worship at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral on Thursday, December 20, 2018 from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. Holy Hour will be followed by connecting with other young adults at a local restaurant. Respect Life Mass & Pro-Vita Awards - CANCELED

***Due to the weather forecast for Sunday, January 20, the Respect Life Mass and Pro-Vita Awards, scheduled for that day, has been canceled.***

Bishop James F. Checchio will celebrate the Annual Diocesan Respect for Life Mass at noon on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi, 548 Main Street, Metuchen. At this time, the bishop will present the 2019 “Pro-Vita” awards.

This year’s recipients are: Patricia Daly, a parishioner at Immaculate Conception Church in Annandale, who is being recognized for her service in promoting the sanctity of human life in the parish and the local community; Carolyn Glodek, a parishioner at St. John Vianney Parish in Colonia, who is very involved with Life Choices Resource Center in Metuchen, helping young women facing unplanned pregnancies to choose life; and William Tevald, a parishioner at Immaculate Conception Church in Annandale, who is heavily involved with setting up the St. Anne’s Center in Phillipsburg, a home for women who are pregnant and homeless.

Ecumenical Prayer Service for Christian Unity

All are invited to join Bishop Checchio at the Ecumenical Prayer Service to Celebrate the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Bishop Checchio will be joined by representatives of the Episcopal, Lutheran and Orthodox communities in New Jersey. This year's theme for the Week of Prayer is "Justice, Only Justice, You shall Pursue" (cf. Deuteronomy 16:20), which was chosen for its powerful message of promoting truth, equality and unity which are recognized as common needs throughout the world. All are welcome to attend!

Chrism Mass - Watch Live!

4 p.m.

The Chrism Mass, held on the Monday of Holy Week, is one of the most solemn and significant liturgies of our Church. During the Mass, Bishop James F. Checchio will bless the oil of catechumens, the oil of the sick, and the oil of chrism. The first is used for adult catechumens and infants, the second for anointing the sick, and the third is the sacred oil of chrism for baptism, confirmation, the ordination of priests and the consecration of altars.
