Diaconate Ordination

10 a.m.

Fifteen men will be ordained as deacons for service in the Diocese of Metuchen on Saturday, May 20. Two of the men are preparing for eventual service in the priesthood. The Ordination will take place beginning at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi, 32 Elm Avenue. The Most Rev. James F. Checchio, Bishop of Metuchen, will be the celebrant. While admittance is by ticket only, those who wish to view the Ordination can watch via livestream here:

Following their ordination, the deacons will assist the bishop and his priests in the ministry of the word, of the altar and of charity. As ministers of the altar, deacons proclaim the gospel, prepare the altar and distribute the Lord’s body and blood to the faithful. Deacons preside over public prayer, administer baptism, assist at and bless marriages, bring viaticum to the dying and conduct funeral rites.

Please keep these men in your prayers, that they might conduct their future diaconal ministry “filled with the Holy Spirit.”

Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord - Holyday of Obligation

Christ's Ascension marks the definitive entrance of Jesus' humanity into God's heavenly domain, whence he will come again (cf. Acts 1:11); this humanity in the meantime hides him from the eyes of men (cf. Col 3:3). (Catechism of the Catholic Church #665)

Jesus Christ, the head of the Church, precedes us into the Father's glorious kingdom so that we, the members of his Body, may live in the hope of one day being with him for ever. (Catechism of the Catholic Church #666)

Jesus Christ, having entered the sanctuary of heaven once and for all, intercedes constantly for us as the mediator who assures us of the permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit. (Catechism of the Catholic Church #667)
