Diaconate Ordination

10 a.m.

Fifteen men will be ordained as deacons for service in the Diocese of Metuchen on Saturday, May 20. Two of the men are preparing for eventual service in the priesthood. The Ordination will take place beginning at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi, 32 Elm Avenue. The Most Rev. James F. Checchio, Bishop of Metuchen, will be the celebrant. While admittance is by ticket only, those who wish to view the Ordination can watch via livestream here: http://www.stfranciscathedral.org/

Following their ordination, the deacons will assist the bishop and his priests in the ministry of the word, of the altar and of charity. As ministers of the altar, deacons proclaim the gospel, prepare the altar and distribute the Lord’s body and blood to the faithful. Deacons preside over public prayer, administer baptism, assist at and bless marriages, bring viaticum to the dying and conduct funeral rites.

Please keep these men in your prayers, that they might conduct their future diaconal ministry “filled with the Holy Spirit.”

World Mission Sunday Family Celebration

10:30 am – 3:00 pm

In our Diocese, the World Mission Sunday (WMS) Family Celebration on October 22, 2017 starts with a one-mile walk in the blocks surrounding the Cathedral. This Walk-A-Thon mimics the mile-or-so walk that the poor and disadvantaged children in mission countries have to live with in order to get to Church or school. Our Diocesan children raise funds for disadvantaged children in mission countries through pledges for participating in the Walk-A-Thon. The walk starts at the CYO and ends at the steps of the Cathedral where the Bishop and concelebrants greet and bless the walkers a few minutes before noon. After the final Prayer of the Mass, approximately eight or so “awards” will be presented to distinguished Schools /Religious Education Programs. Finally, a simple “mission meal” is served downstairs in SFC (approximately 150 attendees) during which a brief mission presentation is given.

2017 World Mission Sunday Mass Celebration

12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

Bishop James F. Checchio invites all to the Diocese of Metuchen's 2017 World Mission Sunday (WMS) Mass Celebration. It’s a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit ourselves to the Church’s missionary activity and an opportunity to show solidarity with our sisters and brothers in Christ. On WMS, prayers are offered and donations collected for the Mission Church. These gifts are given to support churches and mission stations, orphanages, hospitals, clinics, schools, as well as seminarians, Sister/Brother Novices in mission countries. Evening Prayer for World Day of the Poor

5 p.m.

No fee

All of the faithful are invited to join Bishop Checchio at Evening Prayer for the first World Day of the Poor on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 5 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Metuchen.

This will be an occasion for our community to reflect on how poverty is at the heart of the Gospel and an opportunity for those who work to aid, care for and comfort those in greatest need to be affirmed, inspired and sent forth with a renewed commitment to building a “culture of encounter” and bringing people together across differences with tenderness and solidarity. Please consider attending!
