The vocation and contributions of men and women of the diocese who are consecrated to God by vows of chastity, poverty and obedience will be recognized in all parishes Feb. 5, when the annual World Day for Consecrated Life is observed.
To commemorate the day, Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski will serve as principal celebrant at an evening prayer service beginning at 4 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi, Metuchen.
During the prayer service, religious celebrating significant milestones in their professions will be recognized by the bishop and members of the faith community.
"As Christ is the light of the world so, too, are those in consecrated life - as they are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all people," said Religious Teachers Filippini Sister Ascenza Tizzano, delegate, Office of Religious. "Through their commitment and willingness to serve God and others each day, their light shines through in their words, and deeds."
World Day for Consecrated Life is a day for all the faithful to gather in prayer, to celebrate, to give thanks to the Lord for the gift of consecrated life and to reflect on the important role of consecrated life in the Church, Sister Ascenza said.
World Day for Consecrated Life was established by Pope John Paul II in 1997 to recognize those devoted to consecrated life, providing an opportunity for them to renew their dedication.
The annual day of prayer is celebrated in the Church on Feb. 2, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. When the feast day does not occur on a Sunday, World Day for Consecrated Life is observed the following Sunday in all parishes in order to highlight the gift of consecrated persons for the whole Church.
All are invited to attend the prayer service and light reception that follows. Those who plan to attend contact Sister Ascenza at (732) 562-1990, ext. 1102, or atizzano@diometuchen.org.
